The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone: Book Summary

In this book summary of The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone, you’ll find my notes, high-level ideas, valuable lessons, and important action steps.

The 10X Rule Summary

“Almost every problem people face in their careers and other aspects of their lives—such as failed diets, marriages, and financial problems—are all the result of not taking enough action.”

Four biggest mistakes people make with their goals: setting goals too low, underestimating what it takes to accomplish, competing instead of dominating, underestimating how much adversity they need to overcome.

Every goal is going to be hard to achieve. So why not set huge goals and get huge results?

“Never reduce a target. Instead, increase actions.” (Yes!)

Success isn’t something that randomly happens. Success comes from persistent actions and time.

Success is important. Success is your duty. There is no shortage of success.

“The reason successful people become lucky is success naturally allows for more success.”

Successful people take responsibility for when they lose and win. They don’t play victim or the blame game, that’s for losers.

There are four degrees of action: do nothing, retreat, take normal levels of action, take massive action. Taking massive action is the only logical solution if you want to be successful.

“The average worker reads an average of less than one book a year and works an average of 37.5 hours per week. This same person makes 319 times less money than the top U.S. CEOs, who claim to read more than 60 books a year.” (This is convincing evidence to read more books in the TYS Book Club.)

Set huge 10X goals with a clear reason why behind them, and them write them down every day. Following these three steps will inspire you and keep your attention on the goal since it’s so big.

You simply can’t be great without being obsessed. Being obsessed about your work or cause is a gift.

Approach your goals like both the tortoise and the hare, consistent and fast.

Fear is a sign of what you should do.

Track how you spend your time during the day, then get rid of everything wasteful. Simple process.

View criticism as a sign of your success and to keep going. Low performers criticize others to feel better about themselves.

Customer acquisition trumps customer satisfaction.

The more omnipresent you and your brand are, the more people you can influence, sell to, and help. Think big with omnipresence.

Excuses don’t help you find a solution to the problem and get better. Successful people take responsibility, they don’t make excuses.

The major difference between successful people and unsuccessful people isn’t some unique genetic makeup. Everything successful people do is attainable if you’re able to focus and work for it.

Make 10X goals, create a list of 10X actions, and then take 10X actions.

Mini Summary

Set huge 10X goals, regardless of what you, other people, or society thinks is possible.

Take huge 10X actions, regardless of what you, other people, or society thinks is necessary.

Focus on the huge results and why you set your goals, because that will inspire you to do the work and it won’t feel like work when you’re rewarded for your big actions.

Three Favorite Quotes

“Wake up! No one is going to save you. No one is going to take care of your family or your retirement. No one is going to “make things” work out for you. The only way to do so is to utilize every moment of every day at 10X levels.”

“What if the only thing standing in the way of your greatness was that you just had to go after everything obsessively, persistently, and as though your life depended on it?”

“As long as you are alive, you will either live to accomplish your own goals and dreams or be used as a resource to accomplish someone else’s.”

Action Steps For You

Since New Year 2017 is almost a week away, I think you know where I’m going with these action steps. My action steps for you, based on The 10X Rule, is to set 10X goals and take 10X actions for 2017 and beyond.

First, let’s get into 10X goals.

Say you’re an entrepreneur in this example, and you wish to grow your social media presence. A normal goal is to get to 1,000 Twitter followers, Instagram followers, and Facebook page likes in the year 2017. A 10X goal is to get 10,000 of each.

Or, as the author (Grant Cardone) mentions, don’t make your goal to become a millionaire at age 30. Instead, he says, set a 10X goal to have $10 million at 30. His reasoning is if you fall short, you’d much rather have $5,000,000 to your name than $500,000.

Setting 10X goals is only effective when you commit and follow through with 10X actions. Many people set goals. What separates the best from the rest is they take huge, 10X actions and never stop.

The never giving up part is clear. You can’t stop chasing your goals after a few weeks or months in a new year. There are no excuses if you want to be successful.

What’s a little less clear is the difference between 10X actions and normal actions.

For example, maybe you’re a sales rep and your 10X goal is to make six figures in 2017. Trying to reach this goal with normal actions would mean aiming to take your job more serious by putting in an extra hour each morning. Doing 10X actions would mean working two hours earlier and two hours later each day, working Saturdays and Sundays, and reading 20 sales books to improve your craft. That’s how you 10X your results.

Or maybe your 10X goal is to lose 20 pounds and get six-pack abs in 2017. Taking normal actions would mean going to the gym three times a week. Taking 10X actions means going to the gym six days a week and sticking to healthy eating six days a week. You’ll quickly see the difference in your results by doubling your weekly exercises and eating healthier.

I don’t know what your main goals are for 2017. I do know that you’re going to be more successful and satisfied if you set 10X goals and take 10X actions. So whatever is on your mind that you really want to achieve, commit to that.

And remember to focus on the results and why you want them in the first place during the time between setting your goals and before you reach them. Continue this process of 10X goals and 10X actions year after year, and you’ll create such an amazing life that living it each day almost shocks you.

Go 10X your career, relationships, wealth, health, and freedom!
